Description / Mora 106 Carving Knife

The 106 features an 82mm blade, making it slightly longer than the 120 knife. It's good for precision in detailed carvings as well as shaping wood before adding details. Crafted with a carbon steel blade and a Birchwood handle treated with Linseed oil, this knife offers both comfort in the handle while carving as well as a really sharp blade ensuring the knife is safe to use.

Key Features:

Carbon Blade: The knife features a razor-sharp, 82mm long, and 2.5mm thick carbon steel blade known for its durability and edge retention. This robust blade makes it an ideal choice for intricate and detailed carving tasks.
Birchwood Handle: The handle, treated with Linseed oil for enhanced durability, not only ensures a comfortable grip but also adds an aesthetic appeal to the tool. It strikes a balance between control and ease of use during prolonged carving sessions.
Versatile Design: With a slightly larger blade compared to the Morakniv 120, the 106 offers versatility, allowing users to shape blocks and blanks while excelling in fine and detailed carving work.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) about the Morakniv 106:

1. How do I maintain the carbon steel blade?

Carbon steel requires care to prevent rusting. After each use, clean the blade with a dry cloth. Applying a thin coat of oil can help prevent corrosion when not in use for extended periods.

2. Can I use the Morakniv 106 for different types of wood?

Yes, the knife is suitable for various types of wood. However, harder woods may require more frequent sharpening due to their impact on the blade's edge.

3. Is the handle comfortable for extended use?

The Birchwood handle, treated with Linseed oil, provides a comfortable grip. However, personal comfort preferences can vary, and some users might prefer additional padding or grip enhancements for extended carving sessions.

4. How durable is the blade's edge?

The carbon steel blade is known for its edge retention, providing durability for intricate and detailed carving. Regular maintenance, including proper sharpening and storage, can prolong the blade's sharpness.

5. Can the knife be used by beginners?

Yes, the Morakniv 106 is suitable for both experienced woodcarvers and beginners due to its versatile design and manageable size. However, beginners should exercise caution and practice proper carving techniques to avoid accidents.

6. How big is the blade?

The Blade is 82mm long but 2.5mm thick. The blade continues through the handle (rat tail tang) with a total length of 190mm.

7. I've seen Sloyd knives before, is this a sloyd knife?

Yes, Sloyd is the Swedish word for craft? (so it literally means - Craft Knife)

Love the knife, have the sheath
Review by
Love the knife, cuts great when sharp - splits more when starting to dull. It also sharpens really well with a good strop, and is a great shape for stripping away wood and pivoting for a smooth finish.

I also loved that it came with a sheath as this long blade easily cuts my tool roll! However the plastic sheath on this 106 and my 120 are both too loose, and the knives easily slip out. This has led to drops causing significant damage to both my carving moras, which is very frustrating given the quality and price of these tools.

It's a real shame the fit of the sheath doesn't match the quality and vulnerability of the blade.

Smaller hands like mine may eventually find the chub handle a bit tiring over long carving sessions, but hey, it's birch so could probably be carved down.

Unbeatable value for money
Review by
A quality little knife in traditional keeping. It's a lot of knife for the money.

A recommendation from an accomplished, Danish bush crafter. He maintains it's his favorite wood knife and I must say I agree. You won't be dissapointed in this knife for the outlay.
