Bow Drill Kit Contents

  • 1 x Bow
  • 1 x Spindle
  • 1 x Fire Board
  • 1 x Pressure Plate
  • 1 x Tinder

How To Use A Bow Drill

  1. Setup: Position the fire board on the ground with one of the notches along its length. Choose a notch that appears suitable for ember production.
  2. Place the Spindle: Insert the spindle upright into the chosen notch on the fire board. Position the tinder underneath as before. Hold the fire board steady with your foot or another object.
  3. Use the Bow: Attach the provided bowstring to the spindle and bow. Rotate the spindle quickly back and forth using the bow, applying downward pressure.
  4. Create Friction: Maintain a steady motion with the bow, causing the spindle to rotate against the fire board, generating heat through friction.
  5. Monitor Progress: As you bow, observe the notch closely for signs of smoke and ember formation. Adjust your technique or switch to a different notch if needed.
  6. Collect the Ember: After several minutes of consistent bowing, smoke and a glowing ember should form in the chosen notch. Continue until the ember is large and hot.
  7. Transfer and Ignite: Gently tap the fire board to release the ember onto the tinder below, being careful not to extinguish it. Apply pressure if needed with the provided pressure plate.
  8. Blow gently on the ember to encourage it to ignite the tinder.
  9. Build the Fire: As the tinder ignites, gradually add more fuel, such as small twigs and sticks, to build up the fire.
  10. Don't give up! Lighting a fire with a bow drill isn't easy but it's a great feeling when it finally works!
