Description / Morakniv 164 Right Handed Wood Carving Knife

This spoon carving knife from Mora is perfect for anyone from beginners to advanced users. The stainless steel blade has a single edge allowing you to apply extra pressure to the blade in order to push with the back of your other hand or thumb. The blade comes razor sharp out of the pack and is perfect for all kinds of wood from lime to hardwoods like cherry. The 164 was reprofiled a few years ago after consultation with some renowned woodcarvers. The improved edge and bevels make it, in our opinion, the best spoon carving knife in our range. This is the right handed model, a left handed model is also avaliable.

Morakniv 164 FAQs

What is the difference between the Mora 164 and 162?

The Mora 164 and 162 share the same blade profile, although the 162 is double edge. This allows you to both push and pull the blade around your bowl, be careful though - the temptation to put a thumb on the back of the blade when carving can be dangerous with a double edge knife. Watch the video below to see the explanation of all of the Mora wood carving knives.

How do you sharpen the 164?

The most important part of sharpening any hook knife is to check if the bevel is on the inside or the outside. The 164 has a flat inside with the bevel on the outside. You could avoid sharpening the inside as it can change the geometry of the edge making the knife less effective.

First you should align the bevel on a whetstone or strop (depending on how blunt the knife is). Make sure the ede stays in contact with the sharpener and then push the blade along the surface while roating your hand. You can also use the sharpie or felt tip trick: Colour in the edge you want to sharpen about 2mm in from the edge and sharpen along the stone until all of the sharpie has gone. The marker won't effect the blades edge.

Is it avaliable in left handed?

Yes, you can get the Mora 164 in left handed here:
