If I throw it, won't it break? 

If you throw it at a softer target it will last longer, but like anything if you are throwing the axe hundreds of time into some fairly solid hardwood the stress fractures will break the axe over time. Spruce or pinewood are the best balance for ensuring the axe stays in the target and it doesn't damage it too much.
